25th January, 2006 Anything you want…

For shops in London, diversification is vital. Whereas in other, less cosmopolitan places, each shop has a specific purpose, in London competition and social diversity force the shopkeeper to spread his bets more widely. Most commonly this happens in newsagents who have traditionally sold a variety of groceries, magazines and stationery. It is not uncommon to find them selling handbags or clothes or electrical equipment. This goes even further in other shops. On Rye Lane in Peckham you can buy your halal meat and have your GSM phone unlocked at the same time.

There is something unnatural aobut this marrying of technology and meat. These are two parts of human life we usually try to keep at arms length from each other. To have them both being opperated on in the same place seems wrong, transgressive - a symptom of something we cannot or dare not describe.
